EMDR Therapy
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a specialised, evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from trauma and other emotionally distressing experiences.
It is recognised worldwide as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and more.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on helping the brain reprocess difficult memories in a way that reduces their emotional impact. It does this by combining focused attention on distressing memories with guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (such as tapping or sounds). This allows the brain to “digest” past experiences and shift them from being overwhelming to manageable.
What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR therapy can be effective for a wide range of issues, including:
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and panic attacks
Depression
Grief and loss
Childhood abuse or neglect
Phobias
Performance anxiety
Negative self-beliefs
What to Expect in EMDR Therapy
During EMDR sessions, Emma will work together with you to identify the past events that may be contributing to your current difficulties. While you focus on aspects of these memories, Emma will guide you through bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements or tapping), which helps your brain reprocess the information more healthily.
In Emma’s experience, most clients find EMDR to be a gentle yet powerful process that helps them feel more at peace with their past and more in control of their present.
Is EMDR Right for You?
If you feel stuck, overwhelmed by past experiences, or held back by negative beliefs about yourself, EMDR may be a good fit. It’s a structured, collaborative, and highly researched therapy approach that helps many people move forward in life with greater clarity and confidence.
At the initial therapy session with Emma, more information, resources, and discussions are conducted to decide on the best approaches for healing, resolving, and processing traumatic events. EMDR is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities, such as trauma-informed CBT, somatic experiencing, or DBT.
